I enjoy structure and am task oriented, but at the same time I am very cognizant of the needs of others. I want their needs to be met and their voices to be heard. I lead by example through my actions. Thus, I have a personal blending of leadership styles to call my own. I see myself as a democratic leader with glimpses of servant leadership and the strong desire to practice distributive leadership. In terms of being democratic, I listen and am receptive to other people’s thoughts and ideas. I want to hear what they have to say because they often offer new perspectives or key insights. Their needs are also important in the decision making. Stakeholder needs must be recognized and addressed as decisions are made, and this is why I feel that a small piece of me tends toward servant leadership. Additionally, distributive leadership is powerful. It utilizes talents of the faculty and staff to help carry out a school’s vision. By properly assessing and piecing together their’ strengths, colleagues can benefit by learning from each other and use that knowledge to benefit their students. This collaborative effort is essential to accomplishing the school vision as a team. It does not mean everyone can be directly involved in every decision. However, each person’s role is a vital part in keeping the heartbeat of the school community alive.
Will I remain tied and bound to this personally blended leadership style? The answer to that is no. I believe the leadership style described above will evolve as I continue to experience the joys and trials of leadership. Even though I am a leader, I am still a constant learner. I want to lead through my actions and be an example to the best of my ability.
