#1 Be an active listener.
It is true that a leader’s plate can be overflowing. At times there does not seem to be any more head space left for more input. However, she needs to be willing to listen to her staff, parents, and students who come and knock on her office door. She needs to acknowledge their concerns or wonderful accomplishments that they tell her about. She needs to be ready to participate in the conversation and summarize their thoughts to help clarify. As a leader for the school community, she must be an actively listener.
#2 Lead with integrity.
Decisions that leaders make can have complex consequences. They can affect many stakeholders. It is important that all decisions are made honestly and ethically. A situation may warrant careful consideration of all sides and no clear correct answer. However, a leader must come to a decision wisely and with courage to stand by and support what she believes in.
#3 Everyone must be willing to learn.
Learning is not an assigned role, but rather simply a part of life. Being willing to learn from others is essential to building community, accomplishing tasks, and carrying out an established vision. Teachers learn from students and students learn from teachers. Teachers also are sharing ideas and lessons with each other so that they can learn from one another. Support staff learn from students and they also learn from teachers. In education, learning should not be tied to a specific group of people on campus. Even a leader must be a learner.
