It is not always easy for an educator to give class time towards a student’s specific interest. An educator should design his or her lessons for students to personally engage in the learning. Students have a vested interest in the topic being studied. Instead of putting a single set of facts in front of a student, they can be given options of what to learn. They can choose from a set of topics and pursue one that they most relate with. They can spend time during class creating a product or exploring a topic so that they can tell their peers about it.
It is a mind shift to think this way. It is difficult to do something that feels like “giving up” time. However, educators need to blend what students “must” learn with what they enjoy. Their projects need to be shared with the community of learners - whether it be with their peers at school, their families, or even the greater community. I hope other educators will join me in giving students the chance to explore, understand, and share their passions through their own creations!
